We live in an infinitely complex world, existing at the intersection of innumerable influences, forces and desires. From the microscopic activities inside our own bodies to the geopolitical workings of the ever-shrinking world at large, these intersections are often defined by conflict. Frequently these conflicts result in outcomes which, from our own vantage points, can only be seen as brutal, senseless and terrible.
These paintings seek to address this brutality. Through the use of a figurative language synthesized from childhood sources such as comics, cartoons and video games, each paintings depicts a portion of a fable-like or mythological narrative presented as a sort of meditative device or cosmic diagram. Violence, suffering and destruction are all present and unmasked, but through the activities taking place on the canvas are partially transformed into a nonsensical blissfulness, standing defiantly against the horrors created by so-called logic and reason. |
